You know it is a MUST that I have a girl trip highlighted on my calendar with the destination written in the individual squares with a bold and bright sharpie pen to get me through the month. (Yes, it’s monthly…like a period!) I have elected myself to the position of CEO of girl trips. I am in charge and take full responsibility for my missions because I recognize that I am the one with the organizational and leadership skills to form my posse that keeps my mental health afloat.
I have a few teams that are involved, and some teams have names. For example, there are the MuMu’s, The Mean Girls, and the YaYa’s.
They consist of lifelong childhood friends, college girlfriends, and of course the group of girls that I peg to be more like my therapist and have had to help me raise my three kids kinda friends…you gotta keep em close because they know too much… kinda friend!
Perhaps I have also had to select some of my board of directors to be in charge of “activities” if you will… “Activities” known best as happy hour (which can frighteningly develop into a ticking time bomb) when the wine glasses get yanked down from the shelf, the twist tops get untwisted, and the “real talk” gets to talking…and I’m good at all of it! (Just needing to acknowledge a few of my attributes!) We wait…seldom patiently, for our turn to repeat our stories that we have told a million times before, we chuckle again, as we have a million times before, and no matter what group of awesome and brilliant friends I am with, inevitably it will be said, at least a million times…”Hey, while you’re up”…
It’s what we do. You get them another “splash” when you have a friend that’s “down”. We take care of each other… making sure they, and their glasses, are kept as full as possible. It is being kind. It’s a promise we make that doesn’t require a secret handshake. It is caring. It is vital. I know that not everyone “needs” a girl trip, but it is my guess that everyone does need a friend that will stand up and grab that one thing for you when you find that you just can’t reach it yourself. A someone that has the empathy to say…”I’ll get it, I’m up”. That person.
I get needy some days and not just because it’s January or February or August. (Although I don’t mind having an excuse to snuggle in and stop hating myself for not doing jack to save the world) I admit… I don’t have a skip in my step every day, (Mama said they’ll be days) so when I get into a big-time funk and I desperately need to see a brighter side of the world, I’m glad I don’t have to reach far…I grab my friends and say, “Hey, while you’re up”…
Just a splash!

Bravo Tracy! Brings to mind the Beatles classic “Oh I Get by with a Little Help from my Friends”! What would we do without our buds!?
Tracy Gaines
That is so true. I am a codependent soul, and Gary will not tell me that I look fat in that dress so what’s a girl gonna do? 🙂
Sue
