Why in the world do southern belles believe they have the upper hand on manners just because they happened to be born in this cracker section of our great nation. This drives me crazy. Sweet tea drinkers can be a piece of work, for sure, but sorry my little magnolia’s…it’s not about geography. If you were “raised” (like a corn crop )in the south, you most likely are a God fearing church going Christian. I recently read an article in our local paper, written by a local southern lady, that this was a burden. She actually wrote that southern hospitality interfered with her day. The effort of doing all the necessary things, a good southern girl needs to do, was a chore. Lordy, showing folks kindness and sweetness, and making mama proud, was just down right exhausting! I thought, wow, this can’t be true. I’m from the south and I have never thought, for a minute, that if I baked someone a pie, it would impress my Mom. Of course, I always feel better when I attend a church service, on a lovely Sunday morning, but I gotta say…by Sunday evening, the bitch is back. I’m just saying, for her to imply that a kind gesture for an elderly neighbor is “work”, or delivering a casserole takes up too much of her precious time….well, now, that kinda thinkin, just gets my goat!
Here is what I think, “sugar”, I think it is hard to put a metal roof on a house in central Florida in the middle of the summer. I DON’T think it’s hard to have a back yard barbecue! I think it is hard to build a bridge. I DON’T think it is hard to play bridge. I think it is hard to clean public bathrooms. I DON’T think it is hard to be in public.
Being nice is not a job. It certainly isn’t charming to complain either, so listen here, Miss Scarlett… ain’t nobody got time for that! Don’t make a pie, take a xanax! Try your best to cope with the “task”of being kind, and the “burden” of taking care of people in your life that you care about, because I reckon no one else gives a rats ass…My, sweet pea, I betcha your Mama would be proud!
