This Time…Next Year! (dedicated to Kelley)

January 15, 2019 by Tracy Gaines

Once upon a time…

I was born.

went to college.

met Gary.

three kids.

Blah Blah Blah

happily ever after…The End.

Riveting right? Well, of course, I have a blog!

Oh, the mesmerizing milestones that have unraveled in my life story cease to amaze! As early as the age of 15 or 16, I kept a calendar, where I documented my challenges and everyday extraordinary occurrences. My diary, (blog of 69) if you will, basically divulged the suspense of what I wore to school in the 9th grade. God forbid I’m seen in bell-bottoms twice in the same week. And, of course, I kept precise and accurate records in bold ink, whether or not a young suitor had indeed given me the time of day. (e.g. “Hey, ummmmm…you, Denise Kelley’s sister…) Apparently, at the end of the day, these two vital statistics were critical to me. These urgent documentations controlled my days and disrupted my grades. I see now I was clearly on a path to unknown heights, bright beginnings, and tremendous possibilities. I always knew I would be “almost” anything I wanted to be.

So wonder no more… Gary and I started in 1979 on New Year’s Eve (Kelley being only two weeks old, we “stayed in” on that cold and dreary night…and have repeated that “party” ever since), journaling our own personal record of events for the year. It began with the happiest event to the saddest, best song, movie, book, trip, new best friend, worst friend (you may have made the cut either way), and ending with something like, ” make more money & exercise”! Astonishing assessments…we can agree! We dropped this “chronical” around 85, but at Kelley’s suggestion, we picked it back up in 2000 and we made it through 05. (Kelley acknowledging what she “wore” on only one occasion…the boys zero…whatever!) It was/is fun to reflect, but honestly…other than the happiest and saddest events I can say, not one single thing that was written in all those years of recorded memories was “mesmerizing”. Truthfully…not by a long shot, by anyone’s standards. Yet somehow over the course of the years miraculously all things have turned out to be alright. I have it in writing.

The ball drops… a fresh start.

Unless…someone drops the ball. (it happens). We lose out on love, and then it finds us again. Giving us time to gain strength (or for me…just weight :), but the best part of a new beginning is that we get a million-second chances.

You are staring straight into the eye of a new horizon.

Take notes…the beginning has just begun.

So what do you think you’ll wear?

I hope you weren’t “caught” in the same outfit 🙂 You probably wrote about all your dates with Whitey, and I was documenting what I wore in Jr. High School! But I was having fun, and that is all that really matters…right?

Oh Tracy…… I get excited when I see your name in my email, announcing your latest blog. I hurriedly read all the other emails sometimes just deleting without reading. This behavior stems from childhood ritual of work before play. Then with a fresh cup java,I read your blog……not once but more. Sometimes I read it many times. I love it. It’s just a WOW!

      WHAT?…not a glass of wine?
Sometimes I just start writing without a “purpose” in mind, but this one led me on a path to “new beginnings”, and to Kelley as she travels down new paths of her own.
Thank you, Bubbie, and cheers to a very happy, and healthy New Year for you!
